I recently had the pleasure of visiting Slovenia to attend the European Food Summit held in Ljubljana, the country’s capital. Slovenia, often overlooked by travellers, proved to be a hidden gem of Europe. Over the course of three days in Ljubljana and exploring the rest of the country, I discovered a wealth of memorable experiences that I’m eager to share.
Ljubljana: A City of Charm
Ljubljana, situated between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, boasts a rich history and vibrant culture. Since gaining independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Slovenia has emerged as a democratic nation and a member of the European Union and NATO. Ljubljana, with its clean streets and green spaces, exudes a sense of modernity while preserving its Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
The city’s origins date back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that Ljubljana flourished. Today, visitors are greeted by the Baroque splendour of Ljubljana Cathedral and the iconic Dragon Bridge, which symbolises the city’s spirit. A stroll through the Central Market, located by the riverbank, offers a taste of local life, with artisanal shops, cafes, and one of the best-stocked fish stalls in the region.
Other highlights include Tivoli Park, a lush green oasis in the heart of the city, and Preseren Square, where the iconic pink Franciscan Church stands. No visit to Ljubljana is complete without ascending to Ljubljana Castle, offering panoramic views of the city and beyond.
